Scott Morrish

Expert by Experience
Scott Morrish is a photographer and the father of 3… Ben (thirteen), Ollie (six) and Sam… who should be eleven but — weakened by flu and overwhelmed by sepsis — died suddenly and unexpectedly aged just three in Torbay Hospital (Devon, UK). Sam’s death was immediately described as ‘explained’ but ‘unavoidable’. Years later, however, successive investigations determined that Sam’s death was ‘avoidable’ and the result of ‘a catalogue of errors’. These were painful truths which the health service lacked the courage or competence to identify, and proved unable or unwilling to acknowledge. Scott’s fight for honesty, learning and safety spanned the ‘whole system’. It evolved into thinking about the purpose and principles of healthcare itself. He now campaigns for a ‘Just and Restorative Culture’ to deliver psychological safety — for patients and staff — to break the cycle of avoidable harm. Scott was a member of the Expert Advisory Group that helped shape the UK’s pioneering Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch.

NHS England and NHS Improvement

The NHS Long Term Plan says that when organisations work together they provide better care for the public. That is why on 1 April 2019 NHS Improvement and NHS England united as one - our aim, to provide leadership and support to the wider NHS. Nationally, regionally and locally, we champion frontline staff who provide a world-class service, and constantly work to improve the care available given to the people of England.

NHS England/Improvement - The Culture and Leadership Programme

The culture of an organisation or system shapes the behavior of everyone in it, the quality of care it provides and its overall performance. As the NHS re-organises itself to meet the challenges it faces now and in the future, focusing on culture is as important as ever. Building on the evidence of Professor Michael West, NHS Improvement worked with the Kings Fund and pilot trusts to create a programme designed help trusts and organisations create compassionate and inclusive cultures.

The resources are available to all via the NHSI website: https://improvement.nhs.uk/resources/culture-leadership/

Attending today's event are trust and organisations who are either doing the programme or in conversations with us about it. Join us at 13.00 at the NHS England/Improvement stand where there will be the opportunity to meet and network with them

Allocate Software

Allocate Optima optimises your most valuable assets – your people – to deliver your purpose – excellent care for patients.
The results of Optima are powerful: increased productivity and morale of staff, better care quality and safety for patients. Typical savings of over £1m per year.
Optima is the workforce optimisation solution deploying 800,000 nurses, care professionals and doctors in more than 800 organisations worldwide every day. Optima brings together staff and patient needs in one tool, providing a clear view of staffing for every audience from the bedside to the boardroom.

ImproveWell

A motivated workforce leads to better patient outcomes and improved financial performance. The ImproveWell platform uses a smartphone application that empowers frontline healthcare staff to communicate their ideas for improving care directly to senior management. An intelligent data dashboard provides a proven and trusted way to review the improvement ideas coming in from the frontline. From the ward to the board, everyone can make suggestions to improve their workplace.

Just R

Just R are recruitment marketing experts - dedicated to finding the right people to work for NHS organisations.
To date we’ve teamed up with over 25 NHS organisations across the UK, so we understand the healthcare recruitment challenge and how to tackle it. We specialise in developing recruitment websites, digital advertising, branding, video production and photography, our expertise lies in understanding your recruitment goal and tailoring a marketing solution to deliver the results you need.
Our strategies focus on the development of short, medium and long term recruitment pipelines providing organisations with greater control over direct, permanent recruitment to their organisations.

Recent success includes a 55% year on year increase in nurse recruitment to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS FT which equates to a net increase of over 100 nurses in permanent posts in 2018

Locums Nest

We are not an agency! Locum’s Nest is the staff bank management app created by and for doctors. Our software connects healthcare professionals to locum work in NHS Foundation Trusts, GP Federations, Primary Care Networks and practices. The award-winning technology revolutionises the formation and maintenance of staff bank, meaning an ever-increasing pool of local, highly qualified staff constantly at the Trust or practice disposal. This leads to consequential savings and significantly increased shift fill rates of over 95%, four times higher than the national average of 24%. We are currently working with 180 healthcare organisations across the country, with over 20,000 doctors on the app and have matched over 120,000 shifts to date which represents 1.5 million hours of patient care delivered by non-agency doctors.

Skills for Care

Skills for Care helps create a well-led, skilled and valued adult social care workforce.

We support adult social care employers to deliver what the people they support need and what commissioners and regulators expect. We do this by helping them get the best from their most valuable resource - their people. Our practical support helps employers recruit, develop and lead their staff - and retain them.

We’re a trusted independent charity with over 18 years’ experience, working as a delivery partner for the Department of Health and Social Care. We also work closely with related services such as health and housing.

Find out more by taking a look at our website www.skillsforcare.org.uk.

The King's Fund

The King’s Fund is an independent charity working to improve health and care in England.

Our mission describes how we will achieve this:
  • through our research and policy analysis
  • through the work we do with individuals, organisations and communities building their capability, supporting them to adopt best practice and share learning
  • by bringing people together through events and networks to discuss and learn from evidence from the United Kingdom and across the world
  • by promoting greater understanding of health and care policy and practice – helping people to make sense of a complex and rapidly changing environment.

Session one: The power of storytelling

10:00 AM 11:30 AM Charter 1

One person can rarely create and sustain transformational culture change. It takes dialogue that creates a spark in people to encourage them to step up and do something differently themselves. This session explores the role of leaders in engaging everyone to not only have a voice but also to take responsibility for driving change at their level, helping to build the momentum and sustainability for wider change.

Storytelling is essential when seeking to bring about change, as it allows us to reflect and learn from the success and failure of others. Drawing on leaders’ experiences from across the system, this session will provide you with stories that bring culture change to life and can help you to reinforce the desired behaviour change.

10.00am
